This category is set up for those of you who are interested in making your own ceremonial pipe or other item/s out of stone material. We offer several different mediums to work with and they include Steatite or Black Pipestone, Alabaster or White Pipestone, and Catlinite or Red Pipestone.
The pipe blanks that we sell all come pre-drilled. This step is done to insure that the stone is of the quality needed to make a ceremonial pipe, and we also realize that drilling a pipe is often a step in the process that new carvers are most uncomfortable with. (for fear of making an unfixable mistake) The Pipe blanks come in 5 different sizes that vary from small personal pipes to large ceremonial sized pipes.
The buyer has a couple of options when buying a pipe blank from us. You can receive a free redwood stem that is finished and beaded in traditional Sioux style (which has also been pre-fit to the exact size of the drilled hole in the pipe blank) or receive an unfinished piece of high quality sumac that has been dried for several years. This option is for those of you who want to do as much as possible on the pipe and stem on your own.
This category also includes pieces of raw stone for those of you who want to make your pipe or other item from beginning to end. The price of the stone is based on the quality of each piece, the amount of labor needed to get the stone out of the ground, and the size of each piece.
You will find that we offer red catlinite from 2 different areas. It will either come from the Pipestone National Monument Quarries or from 1 of 2 private quarries located on the edge of Pipestone and Rock County. (app. 11 miles from the National Monument) If you are considering buying raw stone and would like to hear our opinion on the differences between the private quarry stone and the stone quarried at the Pipestone National Monument, please feel free to email us or give us a call.
