Here we have 5 smaller pieces of steatite or black pipestone. The smallest piece would make a pipe that measures app 3" long by 3" tall. The largest piece would make a pipe app 5" long and 3-
1/4" tall. The other 3 pieces will fall in the middle somewhere.
We currently have several pictures of pipes made out of this stone on the website, so if you want to get an idea of what your finished pipe might look like, just take a look at a few of our ceremonial black pipes.
This type of stone is usually a little harder to carve than the red Sacred Pipestone and probably a little easier to carve than the pipestone from the private quarries.
This type of stone has been carved into pipes by Native Americans for literally 1000's of years. It holds up exceptionally well to intense heat. Steatite carves the best using a furrier's rasp or other wood carving files. This stone is soft enough that it can be cut quite easily with a regular hacksaw or a bandsaw if you're using a new and sharp woodcutting blade.
