Traditional Ceremonial Elbow Pipes |
| |
| 8-3/4" Personal Black Elbow Pipe |
The total length of this pipe is 8-3/4" long. The bowl measures 2" long and it is 1-1/2" tall. This is a hand crafted traditional elbow pipe made out of steatite, or black pipestone as it is sometimes called.
Steatite has been used for centuries by Native Americans to make ceremonial pipes and other important items. It works very well for pipes because steatite holds up exceptionally well to intense heat. There are steatite pipes similar to this one that have been used for 100's and even 1000's of years and are still in very good shape.
The pipe is signed by "Hapan". The stem is made out of California Redwood. It is decorated with some leather fringes and traditional Sioux beadwork.
The pipe is fully functional and will make a great personal pipe for someone. The pipe has been drilled to allow for plenty of tobacco. The stem also has excellent draw.
Years ago elbow pipes were often used as casual smoking pipes as well as for ceremony. A person would sit cross-legged on the ground and simply rest the pipe bowl against the ground. They would make their stem the right length so that this was comfortable for them. This pipe isn't large enough to do that, but it would still make a nice pipe that could be used for prayer or casual smoking.
If you are interested in this pipe, or have any questions about it, and would like to see additional pictures before purchasing, for ex: the other side of the pipe, a close-up of the beadwork, etc.. please email us or give us a call.
