This is a very large piece of steatite or black pipestone measures app. 5-1/2" x 5-1/2" and it is also 5-1/2" thick. This piece is very large and would be suitable for a nice sized sculpture, or it could be cut up and made into quite a few ceremonial pipes.
This is a type of stone where the finished product will turn nice and black after beeswax is applied to it. This type of stone is usually a little harder to carve than the red Sacred Pipestone and probably a little easier to carve than the pipestone from the private quarries.
This type of stone has been carved into pipes by Native Americans for literally 1000's of years. It holds up exceptionally well to intense heat. Steatite carves the best using a furrier's rasp or other wood carving files. This stone is soft enough that it can be cut quite easily with a regular hacksaw or a bandsaw if you're using a new and sharp woodcutting blade.
