This is a beautiful, top of the line, prime piece of the highest quality pipestone. This large piece of Sacred Catlinite is from the Pipestone National Monument Quarries! It has many beautiful spots or "stars" in it. This very high quality spotted stone rarely comes up for sale, but we've made this nice piece available.
It measures app. 11" across. It is 6" tall on one half and app 5" tall on the other. The thickness varies from 1-1/2" to 2-3/8" thick and is on average about 1-3/4".
This piece of stone is large enough to get several nice large ceremonial pipes out of and maybe 2-3 small personal pipes also. It could also be used for a bunch of personal pipes. (depending on the size you make them)
In our opinion, this is THE premier carving stone. It is some of the highest quality stone available in the world.
You will find that Sacred Pipestone is a joy to carve. It is softer than most carving stones and will hold exceptional detail. It also stands up extremely well to intense heat, so it's ideal for making ceremonial pipes out of. A piece of stone like this, if made into ceremonial pipes, could easily survive 100's of years if it is well cared for. This type of stone carves best using regular wood files and regular hacksaw blades in our opinion. It will also cut great using a bandsaw and a wood blade. It is soft enough that it will carve great with a regular pocket knife if you want to do some real delicate and detailed carving.
