| | | 28-1/8" Black Pipestone Crested Elbow Pipe | The total length of this elbow pipe is 28-1/8" long. The bowl measures a very large 5-1/8" long and it is a hair over 3-7/8" tall. This is a hand crafted traditional crested elbow pipe made out of steatite, or black pipestone as it is sometimes called.
Steatite has been used for centuries by Native Americans to make ceremonial pipes and other important items. It works very well for pipes because steatite holds up exceptionally well to intense heat. There are steatite pipes similar to this one that have been used for 100's of years and are still in very good shape.
The pipe is signed by "Hapan". The stem is made out of California Redwood. It is decorated with deer leather fringes and beaded in two places with traditional Sioux beadwork and a fancy design.
The pipe is fully functional and will make a great ceremonial pipe for someone. The pipe has been drilled to allow for plenty of tobacco. The stem also has excellent draw.
Years ago elbow pipes were often used as casual smoking pipes as well as for ceremony. A person would sit cross-legged on the ground and simply rest the pipe bowl against the ground. They would make their stem the right length so that this was comfortable for them. This pipe is large enough that it could be used just like it would've been 200 years ago.
