This is a great little book titled
Pipestone, A History. The book was put together and published by the Pipestone Indian Shrine.
It's a small 9" x 6" 60 page book.
The booklet is "intended to present a detailed, accurate account of the area now included within Pipestone National Mounment during the period since the first official, direct Federal contact with it."
"The complexity of this century and a quarter of contact makes it necessary to limit the consideration that has been given to such important topics as the aboriginal occupation of the area, the geographic setting, and the sizable body of local folklore arising from the interaction of Indian legend and Victorian romanticism." (The introduction ends with a copy of robert A Murray's signature)
Chapters included in the book are:
Geographic Setting
Aboriginal Background
Early Visitors
Presettlement Days w/ subchapters of The Treaty of 1858 and Late Presettlement Days
The Settlement Period
The Pipestone Quarry Case
Background to Establishment of Pipestone National Monument
Development of Monument by National Park Service
Suggestions for Further Reading
There are also some great early photographs included in the book.
It's basically just a great little book with some pictures and some great, reliable information.
